Crewsaver Millennium Series - MS1 at Broadstairs SC
A bit of everything for day 1. The first race was cancelled after a 100 degree wind shift made a mockery of the course. The wind then got up considerably and the temperature dropped. Lots of fun surfing downwind. The wind then died off again in the third race to leave the fleet fighting to get downwind against the tide. At the end of the day Graham and Kristina were in first, Fergus and Abbi in second, Richard and Vivienne Parr in third. Graham and Kristina kept their speed for the second day, winning with a race in hand. Dave Adams and Wendy came out fighting, and were leading and near the front in all races to clinch 2nd overall. Fergus and Abbi held on to 3rd, while Gill hiked all day to allow Chris to pinch 4th from Rob and Sarah. The weather was "typical Broadstairs": 10-12 knots, one race up to 15, one race down to 8. Sunny all day (I think!). Wind from the NNE, so a little chilly between races, but plenty of action during the races to keep us warm. The races were "fairly predictable": From the start head in shore (wind with the tide): the higher you can point, the better you will do. Then a couple of tacks near the shore before heading out to the buoy: the faster you can foot the better you will do. So the people who came out best were those who could quickly switch from pointing high to sailing fast (OR Graham, who had his strop set differently (by accident!) on each tack!). Down wind with the tide: so the leeward marks appeared before you were expecting them, and a poor rounding would kill you for the next beat into the shore.
